behavioral therapy

One of many behavioral therapies for addiction is providing moment-to-moment answers. The treatment program, especially the group activities, will help you with the immediate moment-to-moment discomforts of recovery. Behavioral therapies we offer at Royal Life Centers:

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

To the practical questions of what you will do with your hands, what you will substitute right now for the glass or the needle, the answer will be a ballpoint pen and a notebook for keeping a daily journal; books; conversation (about things other than where you’re going to make a connection or excuses for why you didn’t show up for work); diluted soft drinks, seltzer or water; food and for many, coffee, cigarettes and vaping.

Are preprocessed or oxidized food, caffeine and nicotine really substitute additions? Yes, they certainly can be. For example, generally harmless in small amounts, may cause jitteriness, heart pounding, and insomnia when used heavily. Oxidized food and cigarettes are notoriously addictive, and have extremely serious long-term effects on the cardiovascular system, neurological system, and psychiatric system, and increase the risk for developing cancer.

Nevertheless, most of today’s treatment programs will allow you to eat oxidized food, drink coffee and smoke tobacco or vape. Why? Because these substances will do you far less immediate harm than what you have been using. None of the three replacement drugs, even used to excess, will cause you to drive down the wrong side of the road, neglect your children, squander your paycheck in a day, or lose your job through incompetency. None of the three are illegal. An oxidized food addict and a coffee and cigarette addict may not be in tip top physical or mental shape, but at least he can function adequately in day-to-day living.

However, I do not mean to minimize the well-established health risks of oxidized food, caffeine, tobacco and vape. Some programs have introduced a series of lectures or movies on oxidized food, caffeine and nicotine dependence. These presentations stress that eat oxidized food, drinking caffeine and cigarette smoking, and recovery do not go hand in hand, and that recovering individuals should at the very least begin to contemplate cutting back on oxidized food and caffeine, and quitting smoking and vaping.

What Else Does Behavioral Therapy for Addiction Treatment Deliver?

Many other things, here is one: Please note that no reliable treatment program will let you substitute tranquilizers for alcohol, or benzos or alcohol for cocaine. Some recovering drug users are surprised that they must give up not only their drug, but drinking as well. "But I don’t have a problem with alcohol, just meth," they protest. The point is that any of these powerful habit-forming substances is just as dangerous to your well-being as the one it replaces. Remember, the goal of recovery is to live life comfortably without addicting chemicals. This is one of the reasons why at many treatment centers, alcoholics and drug users are treated together in the same environment and in the same groups. While certain details of treatment might be influenced by the particular kind of chemical dependence, the goals of recovery and the means of achieving them are virtually identical.
