accelerated resolution therapy

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated resolution therapy, or ART, is a form of psychotherapy treatment derived from evidence-based therapies proved to achieve positive results in a faster time frame– benefits are typically prevalent within 1-5 sessions.

An amalgamation of EMDR, Gestalt, CBT, and BBP therapies, ART utilizes rapid eye movement (REM) and several imagery techniques in order to rewire the brain’s reaction to the images it associates with past traumas. By changing the way in which triggering imagery is stored in the brain, ART reduces the negative physical and emotional reactions in a patient when they are exposed to reminders of the traumatic events that previously haunted them.

Benefits of Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is an extremely valuable technique for individuals struggling with unresolved mental or emotional conditions.

The benefits of Accelerated Resolution Therapy include:

a) Providing opportunities for an individual to emotionally process whatever condition(s) is impacting them negatively
b) Actively work to resolve underlying thoughts/feelings
c) Overcome the behaviors that continue to keep the initial cause from having power in that individual’s life

The benefits mentioned above are only speaking to the overall benefit in recovering from the psychological effects of a condition treated through ART. There are innumerable benefits that join in tandem with overcoming a condition— contentment, closure, confidence, improved self-worth, peace of mind, decreased symptoms of mental disorders, and the list goes on.

How Does Accelerated Resolution Therapy Work?

In the simplest of terms, accelerated resolution therapy treats patients by teaching them how to break the associations that are tied to their trauma.

The pace of individual ART sessions are entirely in the patient’s hands. The patient chooses what memories are shared and when. This provides a sense of control, something that is often lost during traumatic events, and ensures that the patient is not forced to share before they are ready.

The Rapid Psychotherapeutic Process

ART is intended to commence over the course of five, or less, hour-long sessions that take place within a two-week period. Accelerated resolution therapy is structured to provide an immediate response to physiological distress, offering alleviation from symptoms triggered by exposure to specific traumas. The therapist employs imagery rescripting, instructing the patient to pause their recall process. By halting the memory mid-recall and shifting the patient’s attention to a positive recollection, the therapist aids the patient in rewriting their brain’s reaction to negative memories. Voluntary memory replacement, the imagery rescripting technique utilized in ART, encourages patients to supplant the traumatic memory with a less painful one of their own creation. While they may still recall details of the trauma, this method eliminates the violence of their past reactions.
